Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position in the President's Office.

Conditions of Employment

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The salary range for this classification is $3,120 - $5,283 monthly.

Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the director of university communications and public affairs, the writer and communications specialist is primarily responsible for sourcing, researching, writing, editing, and proofing a wide variety of original content for print and digital publications produced by UCM in support of the university's strategic goals. The writer and communications specialist in University Communications and Marketing (UCM) is a skilled and creative storyteller who has a passion for discovering and writing stories that best reflect California State University, Dominguez Hills' core mission, visions and values, and the transformative impact CSUDH has on students, the local community, the state, and the nation.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in English, communications, journalism, marketing, or similar discipline and up to two years of related professional or technical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of relevant experience writing professionally.
Previous professional experience as a journalist or in higher education communications

Certification: Valid driver license

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge - Comprehensive understanding of communications, public affairs, media, and/or marketing theories and strategies; fundamentals of the English language, spelling, syntax, punctuation and grammar; familiarization with editorial style guides; copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications; and interview techniques.
Skills - Compelling storyteller and writer; versatility at adapting written work to specific formats and audiences; expert in proofing and editing; researching and fact-checking; experienced at capturing brand voice and tone; interpersonal communications; verbal communications; strong listener; networking; critical thinking; creativity; and organization.
Abilities -- Understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective; work independently and collaboratively; work in a fast-paced environment; communicate effectively; exercise sound editorial judgement; follow policies and procedures; analyze and present complex concepts to a general audience.

Responsibilities

50% General writing and editing: Conceptualize, pitch, research, write, edit, fact check, and proof stories of students, faculty, staff, alumni, university programs, initiatives, and accomplishments for news.csudh.edu and CSUDH Magazine. Ensure work is consistent with university editorial style, tone, voice, mission, vision, and values. Cover and report on select university events. Work with university photographers and graphic designers on the best way to illustrate information, and work with digital creators and the social media coordinator to distribute stories to a broad audience. Post written pieces to the campus news center website.

25% Internal and external communications: Research, write, edit, fact check, and proof content for various print and digital publications and marketing materials - including but not limited to emails, social media posts, scripts, brochures, banners, and other collateral materials -- produced by UCM, as well as press releases, crisis communications, official letters, talking points, university statements, and other institutional announcements. Ensure consistency, accuracy, quality, and clarity of work.

10% Networking and Outreach: Build and maintain relationships with individuals across campus to proactively identify the stories to tell about CSUDH

10% Planning and Strategy: Collaborate with colleagues in UCM on establishing communications, marketing, and public relations strategies, goals and objectives, and on developing engaging communications and marketing campaigns

5% Other duties as assigned
