Stetson University joined the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment on June 15, 2007, as a signatory and Charter Member. This commitment showed Stetson's dedication to operate sustainably, reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. Environmental responsibility is a core value that the Stetson University campus community holds. We aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, and to achieve this goal, we have committed to gaining the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) Gold status by 2030.

To achieve these goals, Stetson University requires a campus-wide Sustainability and Resilience Coordinator. The Sustainability and Resilience Coordinator will be responsible for developing, promoting, documenting, and reporting key sustainability and resilience initiatives across the institution through cross-institutional partnerships among students, staff, faculty, and administration. Although the position will be housed in the Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience, the Sustainability and Resilience Coordinator must be able to communicate and work effectively across all relevant sectors of the University.

The Coordinator must be an extremely well-organized and self-directed individual who is a quick learner, a team player, and an excellent writer and oral communicator. They must be able to effectively collaborate with and contribute to a professional team of staff engaged in dynamic planning and mission-oriented action. The Coordinator must also be willing and able to serve as a professional mentor for a revolving team of undergraduate student workers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide coordination, support, and supervision of students, faculty, and staff to identify and develop sustainability initiatives and projects within offices and departments across Stetson
  • Collaborate with Stetson leadership, the Environmental Working Group, and the Environmental Fellows to support and monitor progress of sustainability efforts across campus
  • Identify, recommend, and help implement new technologies and strategies into environmental management of the campus that minimize waste, increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, enhance sustainability design and construction, guide purchasing, etc.
  • Facilitate and manage sustainability assessments, data, and reporting instruments, including coordinator of STARS submittals
  • Provide experiential learning opportunities for students through collaboration with the Environmental Fellows and other student groups
  • Advise students doing projects on sustainability issues
  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities
  • Manage AmeriCorps Campus Climate Action Corps staff and resources
  • Lead campus-wide effort to gain STARS Gold status
  • Lead regular meetings of the Environmental Working Group
  • Develop and provide relevant forms of communication between students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and Stetson community members with sustainability interests and ideas
  • Manage and regularly update the Sustainability website and social media platforms as programs and projects evolve over time

Required Skills
  • Ability to stay informed about current local and global sustainability developments and news and how it relates to Stetson's leadership
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Ability to devise and carry out data collection and analysis methodology to demonstrate the failure/success of programs implemented in a complex environment with many constraints
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic program initiatives, create assessment protocols for continual improvement, and maintain high standards for satisfaction, quality, and performance
  • Ability to plan, execute, and monitor project activities effectively; these skills should be demonstrated by a proven track record of completing projects within the specified time frame and budget, working collaboratively with teams, and ensuring that project objectives are met
  • Ability to quickly produce media pieces about sustainability initiatives, successes and challenges that take place on the Stetson campus and beyond for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to speak persuasively and confidently to large and diverse audiences
  • Support the University's Mission and Values in their role

Work Environment: About 50% of the position will involve desk-based office work. Approximately 25% of the position will involve meetings with students, faculty, and others at the Stetson campus and/or through virtual technologies. Approximately 15% of the position will involve visits to facilities and projects on-campus. The remaining 10% of the position will involve external communication, including some need for travel. The position is suitable for a flexible work environment, but the Director should plan on spending at least 50-60% of the average work week on campus.


Required Experience
  • Masters degree in an environmental or sustainability related field
  • Five (5) years related work experience and/or training

Salary Grade: 7
