Sr. Director, Data Engineering

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

The Data Engineering Director is responsible for building and mentoring a highly skilled team of Software and Data Engineers to define, drive and execute on the department vision and objectives. This role will initiate processes which allow the team to collaborate with stakeholders and teams with a high degree of efficiency and clarity. The Director will lead a team of highly motivated and talented individuals that can collaborate with Project Managers, Program Managers and SMEs across the company on high impact marketing technology initiatives.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead, manage, and grow multiple teams of product focused software & data engineers
• Lead efforts to deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments and provide operational support for the applications
• Conduct design and code review to ensure compliance with standards
• Embrace and incubate emerging technology and open-source products across all platforms
• Work to modernize our existing tech stacks and data platforms
• Collaborate with internal teams to find areas of opportunities for automation and machine learning
• Partner with architects, product owners, data professionals, and software & data engineers to drive the implementation of new applications
• Work within and across Agile teams to design, develop, test, implement and support technical solutions across full-stack development tools and technologies
• Work closely with the Data Science and Analytics teams to provide data required for developing, operationalizing, and managing ML models, and dashboards for customer facing applications and internal use
• Build and lead high-performing, agile teams focused on Big Data Engineering
• Devise talent strategy for the team - identify resource gaps or inefficiencies, build hiring plan, recommend promotions and manage performance for consistency with the needs and vision of the department
• Be a key leader and mentor in the areas of advanced data techniques, including data models, data ingestion, data integration, data visualization, data governance, statistical methods, and implementation in cloud-based, traditional and hybrid architectures
• Work closely with the Data Science and Analytics teams to provide data required for developing, operationalizing, and managing ML models, and dashboards for customer facing applications and internal use

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

• Proven skills leading the development of highly available enterprise level applications and platforms utilizing technologies such as AWS, Oracle, Spark, Scala, Java, ML/AI, JSON, Rest, XML, relational databases, etc.
• Hands-on experience with cloud services and tools required for designing cloud architectures / implementing production infrastructures and applications in one or more of the following cloud environments / technologies: AWS, Azure, GCP
• Exceptional problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to understand business challenges, structure complex problems, develop solutions
• Strong engineering and technology background with the ability to learn quickly and go deep into our product and engineering solutions with a DevOps mind-set
• Effective communicator: written or verbal communication, excellent listener, proven collaborator with senior leaders, peers and staff
• Business Partnership Attitude: have the competencies to build very strong partnerships with other technology leaders that enable your team's ability to stay on the leading edge of industry solutions
• Able and willing to "roll up your sleeves" in a collaborative style of working
• Must be able to bring energy and enthusiasm to the job and organization

Required Knowledge & Experience

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or other quantitative field
• At least 12 years of experience in Data warehousing, engineering and architecture
• At least 5 years of managerial experience utilizing strong leadership skills, including mentoring, communication, decision-making, and project management.
• At least 3 years of experience with cloud-based data platforms, preferably AWS
• At least 8 years of Big Data Engineering experience (with large-scale big data technologies such as: Python, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Storm, and equivalent cloud-native services).
