Job Summary

Corn Center for the Visual Arts Studio Technician is primarily responsible for a variety of tasks dealing with safety and maintenance of and access to classrooms, teaching studios, exhibition spaces, and safe and healthy operation of all tools, machinery, and equipment contained therein. Secondary responsibilities include overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of the Corn Center, Yancey One Arsenal and Seaboard Depot, communicating with the Department of Art Chair, the administrative secretary, and faculty regarding maintenance of building spaces and their uses, and seeing to it that the buildings are appropriately set-up for exhibitions, lectures, and other events.

Responsibilities

Significant duties and responsibilities include: Ensures the safe and healthy operating conditions of all classroom and studio spaces and equipment including but not limited to hand tools, shop tools, and heavy machinery.; Maintains and undertakes daily maintenance and minor repairs of all classroom and studio equipment including but not limited to hand tools, shop tools, and heavy machinery.; Oversees equipment maintenance budgets and orders repair and replacement parts for hand tools, shop tools, and heavy machinery.; Assists Art Faculty in training and supervising students in the safe and appropriate use of all classroom and studio equipment including but not limited to hand tools, shop tools, and heavy machinery.; Maintains open shop hours for student use of studios outside classroom hours and trains and oversees student monitors working in these spaces.; Supports Gallery Curator and staff by maintaining the physical operations of exhibition spaces and related equipment.; Oversees all aspects of maintaining classrooms, resource rooms, studios, and exhibition spaces within the Corn Center, Yancey One Arsenal and Carpenters Hall, and contacts appropriate offices in a timely manner for temperature control, medical emergencies, public safety concerns, and opening and securing of spaces within the facility for student access and for events.; Assists faculty and Department of Art Chair in placing orders for supplies and materials for studio art courses, recruiting workshops, studio art faculty development, and other related art studio and gallery needs.

Supplemental Duties include: Provides regular updates to department chair on status of facilities, equipment, and other integral aspects of instruction, studio, and exhibition spaces.; Trains and supervises the work of 3 part-time, non-student positions, 6 Federal Work Study student assistant positions, and 1 part-time department of artwork study position.; Individuals filing these positions perform essential duties including studio safety monitoring, hazardous waste collection, visiting scholar stewardship, and exhibition and event preparation. Most of these positions turn over semi- annually.; Exercises close coordination with Riverpark plant operations with respect to assuring safe and operable facilities regarding lighting, climate control, building accessibility, and continuous functionality of permanent, essential fixtures.; Schedules, supervises, and performs all material preparation pertaining to exhibitions for all five exhibit spaces on Riverpark campus, public engagements including, but not limited to, lectures, workshops, receptions, and on-site recruitment events.; Maintains close coordination with campus services and campus police. Owing to the frequency of our public interactions and events, these two arms of CSU provide constant and invaluable service to the Department of Art via after-hours access scheduling, security, event equipment, and various forms of technical support.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include: High School Diploma and two to three years of related experience and/or training; one-two years postsecondary education preferred.; Requires supervisory experience in working with students and budgets.; Computer literacy, working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

Proposed Salary

The proposed annualized range for this position is $31,882- $34,493 and includes full benefits.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to walk, sit, use hands, controls, tools, heavy equipment, and machinery, reach with arms, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.; The employee must frequently lift and carry objects weighing more than 25 pounds.; Extensive knowledge of safe and efficient use and maintenance of hand tools, shop tools, and heavy machinery in the areas of woodworking, metals fabrication (to include MIG and TIG welding), printmaking (including presses), photography, ceramics kiln, and general art studio maintenance.; General knowledge of studio processes and techniques in sculpture, printmaking, graphics, ceramics, painting, drawing, and photography.

  • Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive a Columbus State University fleet vehicle or other vehicle designated as a fleet vehicle. A successful drug screening will be required as a condition of employment a randomly thereafter.
