We are looking for a Senior Principal Radar Scientist to take on the technical ownership of current and future radar systems, including their modeling, design, testing, operation, and data productization. This person will interface across the organization in fulfillment of their duties and become the technical focal point for Umbra's radar expertise. Additionally, as providing technical support to both internal and external technical stakeholders is a core responsibility, the position requires strong interpersonal skills, a desire to mentor others, and strong presentation ability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and guidance to internal and external technical stakeholders.
  • Works independently and as a team to optimize radar payload design.
  • Works independently and as a team to develop radar payload modes of operation.
  • Works independently and as part of a team to develop and implement radar image formation algorithms and data exploitation to include, but not limited to, multiple channels, multiple polarizations, interferometric SAR, bistatic SAR, and integration of onboard digital signal processing.
  • Technical ownership and execution of Radar Systems Modeling and Simulation.
  • Understanding of impacts of the space environment on various aspects of systems design and image formation with a emphasis on overall value chain in systems design. Space 2.0 mindset.
  • Thorough documentation of requirements, specifications, test plans, and reports.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in a relevant field: i.e. Physics, Electrical, Engineering, Microwave Engineering or similar
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced development environment.
  • Comfortable with technical leadership, fostering knowledge sharing and mentoring relationships.
  • Adaptability to dynamic work environment utilizing the agile processes and digital collaboration tools.
  • Extensive experience working with space-based SAR, including both image formation and calibration.
  • Extensive experience with modeling space-based SAR using Excel, Python, MATLAB, C++ or similar.
  • Familiarity with relevant digital signal processing techniques for various aspects of SAR.
  • Willingness to lead interactive efforts across the team both internally and with mission partners.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in a relevant field: i.e. Physics, Electrical, Microwave Engineering or similar
  • Experience with moving target indication radar modes.
  • Experience with building and testing physical radar systems.
