JOB SUMMARY

We have an opportunity for a Room Control Specialist in Temple TX.  This position is FT with a standard schedule of FRI and SAT 12 hour shifts 7-7 and TUES and WED 2:45 to 11:15.   The person in this role works in the Access Center in the Hospital with no patient contact.  Training for this role typically averages 3 months with varied hours.. 

The Room Control Specialist obtains patient information in order to assign, control and log appropriate service accommodations for patients admitted to the medical facility. This position coordinates special transfers according to room availability, admission approvals from other medical facilities and serves as a facility liasion related to account maintenance tasks to ensure patient account accuracy. Your time is primarily sitting at a desk on the phone.  You will work with Case Manager RNs and House Supervisors to provide smooth operations for patients and facilities. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

Accepts reservations for incoming patients, urgent admissions, and day surgeries.

Facilitates transfers from other healthcare organizations with Administration by collecting appropriate demographic and financial data, approving transfers that meet criteria, and obtaining approvals for exceptions to the transfer policies.

Coordinates activities with the nursing staff and physicians to accommodate reservations due to impending conditions such as bed shortages, staff shortages, room transfers and patient overflow.

Monitors the hospital occupancy and notifies facility identified leadership of impending capacity issues.

Facilitates bed reconciliation activities with the floors.

Follows and ensures compliance of system and revenue cycle policies and procedures.

Monitors and provides reports, as requested, for patient movements and updates for all impending and in-house activities.

Performs necessary corrections and edits for in-house or pending patient activity.

Serves as a subject matter expert related to account maintenance tasks and corrections.

Works specific reports and queues to ensure patient account information is secured for maximum financial reimbursement.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

Previous experience in healthcare related field preferred.

Proven ability to problem-solve, perform critical thinking.

Requires good listening, interpersonal and communication skills, and professional, pleasant and respectful telephone etiquette.

Ability to maintain a professional demeanor in a highly stressful and emotional environment, to include crime, behavioral health and/or suffering patients in addition to life/death situations.

Must be able to exhibit a high level of empathy with the ability to effectively communicate with patients and family members during traumatic events, while demonstrating exceptional customer service skills.

Demonstrates ability to manage multiple, changing priorities in an effective and organized manner. Must be able to multi-task. 

Excellent data entry, numeric, typing and computer navigational skills.

Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and Excel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION - H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent or greater

EXPERIENCE - 1+ Year of work experience

SKILLS - basic computer proficiency, ability to navigate a keyboard, and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, and Excel)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Previous work experience in healthcare/hospital/clinic (front desk, insurance, access services, or similar)

Bi-lingual in English and Spanish

Previous work experience with EPIC electronic medical record system
