GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The laboratory is seeking a motivated individual to join our efforts in exploring disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementia. Under the minimal supervision of the Principal Investigator and other researchers of the team, the incumbent will contribute to multiple organizational aspects of the laboratory that include ordering common laboratory supplies, general maintenance of equipment, establishment of procedures to comply with health and safety regulations and development of protocols and SOPs. The incumbent will participate to the research activity of the lab and is expected to be fully engaged in the scientific projects, as well as participate to the scientific lab meetings. They will perform laboratory experiments which include DNA and RNA purification, quantitative PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blots, DNA cloning, immunostaining and preparation of libraries for high throughput sequencing, CRISPR/Cas9 editing and mammalian cell cultures. Experience in mouse handling and mouse histology is preferred but not necessary. They will be responsible for the analysis of the results and participate in the preparation of manuscripts. The individual must pay attention to details, work independently under minimal supervision, possess good verbal and written communication skills, and work well as part of a team.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.

  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. - pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)
  • Maintains laboratory notebook. Organize and accurately maintain written records of experimental procedures and data collection. Data may be represented as graphs, charts, tables, illustrations, slides, and narrative reports
  • Understands and applies routine scientific techniques in molecular and cellular biology
  • Conducts analysis of results and interpretation of results using statistical techniques
  • Participate in the design of in vitro and in vivo studies
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
  • Prepares lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment
  • May perform independent literature searches
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
  • Maintains and orders supplies.
  • Contribute to maintaining laboratory organization, i.e. databases, reagent inventory, protocols etc.
  • Attend and participate in group meetings


Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy including MS Word, Excel, Illustrator, Photoshop, Powerpoint. Knowledge in Matlab, Python, R, Cellprofiler, ImageJ, EdgeR or Deseq is a strength
  • Must have a professional demeanor and ability to appropriately handle sensitive, confidential information
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently
  • Demonstrate knowledge of general molecular biology techniques like RNA /DNA extractions, RT-PCR and western blot. Experience in animal handling is a strength but not required
  • Attention to details
  • Excellent time management skills

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree required.

EXPERIENCE:

New graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.
