The Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Research Engineer position. Reporting to the Associate Director for Cleanroom Operations, the research engineer supports research activities through the development of expertise on equipment for foundry work, calibrates and maintains equipment, trains users, develops and documents research processes, and communicates with users and engineering counterparts to promote research activities related to semiconductor device fabrication for the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub housed in the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Utilize and apply progressive research expertise and education to assist external users and customers of the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub to conduct research activities in the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory's cleanroom. Provide consultation and perform research related duties involving cleanroom equipment as required by contracted foundry work. Advise users on the design of research experiments and development of research techniques and participate in and provide feedback during research focused meetings. Develop expertise on and facilitate the maintenance, repair, and use of the following equipment to ensure customer goals are satisfied (this includes consultation with other engineer staff within the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory to review issues and improve performance):

o Surface cleaning, plasma treatment, bonding, and flip chip bonding equipment

Obtain knowledge on the following equipment to be able to perform foundry work:

o Optical and e-beam lithography equipment

o Deposition and etching equipment

o Characterization equipment

• Perform administrative work, including the creation and distribution of equipment documents such as procedures, log sheets, etc. Train users on laboratory procedures and safety on existing processes. Develop and update documentation related to new equipment including new processes, procedures, calibration, and provide tool performance on equipment related to the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub.

• Communicate with users and engineering counterparts across the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub. Work with customers of the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub to consult or write technical expertise within project proposals. Deliver updates and reports to meet program milestones.

• Assume additional appropriate related research engineer duties to further the mission of the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons Hub and the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field

• 3-5 years' experience working in process development related to semiconductor processing tools

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field

• Experience working with surface treatment, plasma activation, and bonding

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Excellent organization and planning skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

• Position involves a mix of remaining in a stationary position and moving and traversing throughout the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology facilities as well as stooping, crawling, and ascending/descending stairs and ladders, operating and physically identifying problems with mechanical and electrical equipment, and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Position includes operating at a desk, working in tight spaces, along with working in close proximity to noisy machinery, laboratory chemicals, and toxic and pyrophoric gases, and occasional response to emergency response situations including first responders.

• Incumbent routinely communicates and converses with laboratory occupants and is subject to demanding clients, changing priorities, and managing multiple tasks.

• Incumbent will frequently visit laboratories with exposure to magnetic, explosive, and chemical risks.

• Incumbent will visit spaces occupied by the department in multiple non-ADA compliant facilities, in both air conditioned and nonconditioned spaces, and perform outside work.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum salary is $80,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis. Work authorization is not available for this position.
