Job Description

JOB SUMMARY Repairs, modifies, and upgrades rail cars. Rebuilds car components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors Welds, fabricates, and uses torch and carbon arc to cut. Performs mechanical labor. Repairs and maintains railcars, according to blueprints and other specifications, production machinery, and other equipment using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments: Inspects machines and equipment visually, by touch, special knowledge, and training to locate causes of trouble Measures, cuts, and threads pipes, and replaces airlines using hand tools. Assembles sub-assemblies, major components, and equipment, and checks function to test for proper operation. Repairs broken parts using hand tools and welding equipment

PRODUCTION MECHANIC

JOB SUMMARY

Repairs and maintains railcars, according to blueprints and other specifications, production machinery, and other equipment using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments: Inspects machines and equipment visually, by touch, special knowledge, and training to locate causes of trouble Measures, cuts, and threads pipes, and replaces airlines using hand tools. QUALIFICATIONS

  • Formal education, high school or equivalent
  • Knowledge: mechanical skills
  • Skills: welding and cutting preferred
  • Must pass company established welding test.
  • Mental factors: Decision making and reasoning, planning and scheduling
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Standing, hearing, and seeing for 10 hours, handling for 6 hours, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fingering for 5 hours reaching below waist, twisting, and feeling for 2 hours, sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching over head, and talking for 1 hour. Frequently: standing, kneeling, stretching, reaching, gripping tools or objects and bending at the waist. Regularly: walking, crouching, and twisting while standing. Occasionally: sitting, crawling, and twisting while sitting for 1 hour or less.

Lifting: car parts from 1-50lbs for 10 hours (10-25lbs frequently, 25-50lbs regularly)

Pushing: hand trucks weighing up to 100 lbs to move tools frequently, wrenches weighing up to 10 lbs to tighten bolts

Pulling: 10-25 lbs frequently, 25-50lbs regularly, over 50 lbs occasionally, and cables up to 100lbs to pull lines regularly

Requires indoor work 8 hours per day, and outdoor work 2 hours per day. Exposure to heat and humidity, working at heights regularly, working around moving machinery

Exposure to welding and burning fumes, odors, dust, gases, and uncomfortable noises from welding and burning, working in hot temperatures regularly, working in cold temperatures occasionally, driving automotive equipment, working with oil and grease, working with vibrations, and working alone occasionally. Hazard exposure: mechanical from tools, electrical from welders, radiant energy from torches.

WORKING SCHEDULE:
10 hour shifts; Monday through Thursday with occasional overtime on Fridays.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to line supervisor or work group supervisor.

PAY RATE:
The pay rate for the Production Mechanic position begins at $23.00/hour, and can be increased up to $29.05/hour.

SIGNING BONUS:
$500.00 on first paycheck.
