About the Department:

The Pre-Health Advising Office supports and prepares students to become competitive applicants for graduate-level professional health science programs and works closely with the University Advising Center and Student Academic Engagement and Success (SAES), an area within the Office of the Provost. SAES works to ensure that SMU undergraduate students are aware of the academic opportunities and support systems that operate across campus to ensure their academic success and enrich their experiences inside and outside the classroom.

About the Position:

The Pre-Health Advisor & Success Coach provides academic advising and success and career coaching for undergraduate students who have been identified as belonging to a first-generation, low income, and/or underrepresented student population, are pursuing a degree in the Biological Sciences, and are interested in pursuing medicine, dentistry, or another professional health-related field which requires an advanced graduate-level education.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the academic advisor to Pre-Health students identified as being a first-gen, low income or underrepresented population, who are pursuing a degree in the Biology Department. Advise on the pre-health track, Common Curriculum, and 4-year degree progression.
  • Serve as a success coach to students in specified populations by combining academic and career coaching. Support students in becoming competitive pre-health applicants for professional schools. Advise and assist students through reflective self-assessment, career exploration, and the development of leadership skills.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Hegi Career Development Center and Alumni Relations to create, develop, and promote shadowing and internship opportunities. Assist pre-health students with resume, cover letter, and interview preparation. Conduct Pre-Health mock interviews, and participate on the Health Professions Recommendation Committee.
  • Identify, advise, and mentor students in the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP).
  • Connect students to campus resources, including Academic Departments, Hegi Career Center, and the Learning Enhancement Center. Connect students to financial resources available for professional school entrance exams.
  • This position will require evening or weekend work, on occasion.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's degree is required.

A minimum of three years of experience is required. Experience in academic advising, career development, counseling, higher education, or work in a health career strongly preferred. Work experience in a Pre-Health Advising Office desired.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse population of students, parents, staff and faculty. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must possess strong organizational, planning and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks. Must also demonstrate strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, analyze problems and devise solutions. The ability to work independently and collaboratively with others is essential.

Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Outlook Word and Excel). Knowledge of Peoplesoft is preferred. Certification in success coaching desired.
