PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas ofresponsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughoutthe year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  • Document all prescription renewal requests from live calls, Patient Gateway requests and voicemail messages on the Watkins Prescription Renewal line


  • Complete prescription renewals for provider signature in electronic health record or other applications as required by Partners Information Systems.


  • Ensure correct pharmacy electronic transfer data are entered for each patient's renewals.


  • Ensure all prescriptions are refilled in a timely manner.


  • Communicate to providers or their designees when renewals are pending for signature.


  • Obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions as required by payors. Communicate with RNs, Nurse practitioners and physicians as necessary for successful prior authorizations.


  • Utilize Partners Information Systems and computer technologies for the Pharmacy and other hospital departments by printing reports, labels and forms.


  • Develop workflow for prescription renewal process within the Brigham Medical Specialties Hub.


  • Assist department staff to maintain statistics and workload data in the Brigham Medical Specialties Practices.


  • Assist in training of new or existing employees, including call center and clinic support staff as directed.


  • Provide direction and guidance to pharmacy technician trainees, pharmacy externs, and pharmacy interns in following policy and procedure when necessary.


  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.


  • Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by pharmacists, Registered Pharmacy Technician III, or Certified Technician Specialist.


  • As required by State regulations, wear a name tag with the individual's name and title "Certified Pharmacy Technician."


  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications
  • Highschool diploma or equivalent.

  • Mustbe at least 18 years of age.

  • Successfulcompletion of an accredited Pharmacy technician training program is highlydesirable or completed 500 hours of employment as a Pharmacy TechnicianTrainee.

  • Mustbe a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy ora registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.

  • Mustbe a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved techniciancertification board.

  • Mustmaintain the title Certified Pharmacy Technician with a nationally recognizedcertificate from an accredited certifying organization or be a registeredPharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. Effective January2013.

  • Mustcomplete annual Continuing Education credits as required by the certifying bodyto maintain Certification.

  • Familiaritywith medical terminology, abbreviations and computer technology is required.

  • Mustcomplete annual BWH Pharmacy Technician Competency Assessment Exam.

  • Upondepartmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete annualmandatory training which includes:

    a. Safety Training

    -OSHA/Fire Safety

    - Infection control

    - Safe handling ofchemotherapeutic agents

    b. Annual Competency Assessments

    - Automated DispensingMachines

    - Laws and Regulations

    - Dosage calculations

    - Identification ofdrugs, dosages, routes and storage requirements

  • Twoyears previous hospital experience as a Registered Pharmacy Technician orequivalent experience at BWH.

  • Trainedin most technical staff responsibilities and received a highly effective performanceevaluation as a Registered Pharmacy Technician I or prior experience in anexternal pharmacy technician role for a minimum of two years.
