Peer Support Specialist

Work primarily performed in the office and home-office environment, conducive to performing confidential telephonic meetings.

Primary Job Purpose

The Peer Specialist will function as a role model to peers; exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills; serve as an advocate, providing information and peer support for clients in outpatient and inpatient settings. The Peer Specialist performs a wide range of tasks to assist peers in regaining independence within the community and mastery over their own recovery process; work with members to achieve their personal health outcomes by removing barriers and providing support and education. Encourage engagement in health-related activities and programs.

General Functions and Outcomes

  • Initiates outbound telephone calls or emails to members identified for the Regence Care Management Programs for defined care gap initiatives.
  • Assist members in setting up and sustaining self-help (mutual support) groups, as well as means of locating and joining existing groups.
  • Utilize tools such as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) to assist members in creating their own individual wellness and recovery plans. As much as possible, the PS will share their own recovery story and as the facilitator of these sessions, will demonstrate how they have directed their own recovery.
  • Teach and role model the value of every individual's recovery experience; model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Makes referrals to licensed clinical staff as appropriate.
  • Utilizes the applicable care management platform to appropriately record and track member interactions.

Minimum Requirements
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of individuals on highly sensitive topics.
  • Strong customer service skills including listening, patience, empathy, and maintaining confidentiality.
  • General organization, data entry and administrative skills. Proven ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and prioritize workload.
  • Knowledge of the Recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established standardized mental health processes
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of mental illness/substance use
  • Ability to work a varied schedule such as early evening.
  • Ability to work independently, to prioritize work, meet deadlines and achieve operational standards.
  • Ability to research and problem solve in a creative manner to reach a solution.
  • Ability to identify when it is appropriate to refer to others.

Normally to be proficient in the competencies listed above

The Peer Support Specialist would have a High School diploma with Peer Support Specialist Certification.
