Responsibilities

Senior manager providing support to the Controller as well as oversight and direction to the managers responsible for the processing, accounting, and reporting of employees' salary, taxes and benefit payments, and all other aspects of the Payroll Services department. Ensures proper coordination and operational efficiencies between these sections and between Payroll Services and Human Resources, university departments, and other financial areas (Accounts Payable, Accounting Services, Budget, etc.).

Duties will include:

  • Establishing and managing departmental goals and objectives, including strategic imperatives and SACS initiatives.
  • Assigning and monitoring staff workload and ensuring appropriate cross training and sufficient backup for all critical functions.
  • Interpreting and proposing policies to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state rules and regulations.
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance with university regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Providing oversight and direction to the Payroll Services management team.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient design, upgrades, implementation, and troubleshooting of payroll-related systems by partnering with ITS and HR.
Qualifications

Master's degree and four years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in and six years of relevant experience

  • Two years of experience must be in a supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of applicable payroll-related state and federal laws as well as tax laws.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Knowledge/understanding of payroll/timekeeping systems.
  • Excellent collaboration with ability to effectively communicate (written and verbally) with cross-functional business partners, internal/external stakeholders, and various levels of management.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices to strategically align tasks and people with organizational goals.
  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with full cycle payroll management in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience with financial enterprise resource planning systems (such as PeopleSoft or comparable systems).
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Proven track record in staff development, coaching, performance management, and the use of collaborative decision-making to meet organizational objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and mitigate operating and financial risks, utilizing strong creative problem-solving skills.
