The Parks Downtown Maintenance Worker is a job where you'll be working outdoors in the downtown urban corridor helping to maintain the cleanliness, interacting with the public, and learning horticultural as well as green industry standards, landscaping techniques and irrigation practices. You'll perform a variety of duties including simple mechanical/construction work, pruning, mulching, weeding, and planting methods which are skills you can take with you as you grow into your career.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with infrastructure and grounds maintenance of City parks and downtown public spaces.
- Operate (after provided training) a variety of equipment including utility vehicles, hand tools, and power tools.
- Clean and remove waste from all areas of the downtown corridor.
- Empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers, ash trays and cigarette urns.
- Collect recycling materials.
- Clean and pressure wash downtown sidewalks and public spaces.
- Assist with irrigation maintenance and repairs.
- Help with snow removal.
- Assist with maintenance of downtown water features.
- Perform event prep and clean-up.
- Perform simple tasks related to carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and construction work, often under the supervision of a skilled technician.
- Assist with other park, cemetery, forestry, horticulture, and golf maintenance tasks when requested.
- Report to work on time as scheduled.
- Interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Engage with other coworkers in a considerate and helpful manner and project a positive attitude in the workplace.

Minimum Qualifications/Experience:
- Unrestricted valid driver's license.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Successfully pass a drug screening test, MVR and background check.
- Physical, mental, and cognitive abilities sufficient to perform the essential duties outlined above.
These include:
o Ability to read, write and communicate well with others.
o Physical ability and stamina to perform duties including bending, lifting, digging, pushing, and kneeling.
o Requires light and heavy manual labor that requires walking or standing most of the time.
o Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds maximum.
Proper safety measures for lifting/moving any item are expected to be followed; including, but not limited to, the use of proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), use of lifting/moving equipment, and/or assistance from co-workers.
Working Conditions:
- Position is a non-benefitted seasonal/temporary hourly position.
- Potential for flexible work schedules to allow for work-life-school balance.
- Hours vary from part-time to full-time and may include weekends and holidays.
- Potential for overtime pay and accrued sick/personal leave is available based on qualified hours worked.
- Work occurs outdoors in a variety of weather conditions under the supervision of a crew leader.
- Safety gear is provided and required including, but is not limited to, safety-toed boots, safety glasses and ear protection.
- May use chemicals in cleaning supplies and herbicides.
- Attendance at weekly staff meetings, trainings, and safety meetings is required.
