About the Department

The Chicago Center for HIV Elimination (CCHE) is situated within the Biological Sciences Division at the University of Chicago Medicine. CCHE aims to eliminate all new HIV transmission events by 2041.

The University of Chicago's position on the South Side makes it uniquely situated to test, treat, and prevent new HIV infections in a highly affected population. The South Side communities and majority Black suburbs connected to them to the South represents the largest contiguous Black population in the United States. By using our integrated HIV transmission elimination approaches, we are beginning to make new infections in these communities less frequent.

Job Summary

The Outreach Coordinator will specialize in LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) and TGNC (transgender and gender non-conforming) services as it relates to STI and HIV testing, education, and linkage to resources. The Outreach Coordinator will be part of the Prevention Services team and will engage with community members over the phone, via email, and in person. Candidates will work in a sex-positive and LGBQ and TGNC affirming environment, are expected to actively pursue required knowledge and skills for professional development, and expected to stay informed about the resources available on the South side of Chicago that serve our population and inform the team on opportunities for collaboration.

This position is grant funded.


  • Providing timely education and resources to clients.
  • Providing linkage to HIV/STI testing & treatment options.
  • Establishes and manages all CCHE external partnerships & MOU's including community applications for monetary support.
  • Manages and develops internal outreach/client centered programming at the Village and the hospital location including but not limited to established drop-in programing, the annual AIDS run/walk fundraising efforts, and other events as assigned.
  • Manages community applications for Village space reservations alongside the admin team
  • Coordinates the monthly Community Advisory Board (CAB) & quarterly Executive Community Advisory Board (ECAB) applications, member selection, meeting management, meeting minutes, and member compensation.
  • Supports youth-focused outreach projects, ballroom-focused outreach projects, and club-focused outreach projects.
  • Conducts outreach and builds close relationships with employers, temporary staffing agencies, and other employment and career development agencies to support clients in need of employment assistance.
  • Remain aware of current employment and career development services in the community.
  • Secures formal and informal memoranda of agreement with various stakeholders.
  • Completes proper documentation for all Outreach encounters; this includes service delivery, compensation, referral documentation, etc.
  • Pre-screens community members for supportive service needs that community members may have. For example, housing, employment, and mental health, and referring to Supportive Services when community members are in crisis.
  • Prepares for or participate in quality assurance audits under supervision or following specific protocol procedures.
  • Participates in center related documentation, such as protocol development, procedural manuals, adverse event reports, institutional review board documents, or progress reports.
  • Supports weekend and evening activities as needed.
  • Collects and enters data. Assists in analyzing data. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Is developing skills in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).
Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work or communications.

  • Experience working with and/or providing care to BLGBQ and BTGNC populations.
  • Experience providing HIV/STI testing and counseling.
