Anticipated Shift:

Monday-Friday 8 am-5pm. The anticipated shift is based on the operational needs and can change at any time, with notice.

The Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Technician I to join the lab of Dr. Bill Chiu, Associate Professor of Surgery, to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects and conduct and analyze experiments under supervision.

This person will provide support for ongoing research projects under the supervision of the LST3. This position includes working with mice and different cultured cell lines. This position will perform guided experiments including simple mouse experiments and may assist with performing survival surgery on mice, operate imaging technologies and controlled substance maintenance under direct supervision. Assist with mouse colony care.

Under the supervision of the LST3, the incumbent will perform techniques that require delicate manipulation and/or fine adjustments in mice. After training is complete and adequate independent abilities have been cultivated, work may be performed routinely without direct supervision, however all work is reviewed and discussed with supervisor.

The successful candidate will become a member of a research team and must interact productively with other team members.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments, review literature on an ongoing basis and remain current with new procedures and related research
  • General lab maintenance: maintain lab stock, manage inventory of lab including cell lines, solutions, chemicals, and frozen tissue samples, order supplies, and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. In addition to repair, certify equipment, housekeeping duties for the lab.
  • May order reagents and assist with the safekeeping of hazardous chemical s and solutions in the lab.
  • May assist with orienting new staff, troubleshoot and testing of developmental workflows, and facility management support. (This language needs to be included on all posted jobs).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Previous experience working with animals.Excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse group of staff. Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records. Administrative experience a plus.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

One year's employment experience in laboratory work or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience/training (e.g., one year of college science).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

Work requires the ability to follow detailed instructions and keep accurate records.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.
  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

The expected pay range for this position is $29.56 (Step 1) to $35.64 (Step 10) per hour.
