Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Microbiology Laboratory Manager with coordination and oversight for the efficient and effective operation of Microbiology Laboratory; to directly supervise and evaluate personnel and to perform technical, quality review and administrative duties as they apply to the section; accountable for review of department quality assurance and performance improvement procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
  • This position is responsible for the operational continuity of the Microbiology Laboratory and functions in a line capacity in the management of Medical Laboratory services.
  • Performs routine and specialized procedures, reviews and approves clinical test results for use in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Responsible for assigned and scheduled quality control, review of daily test results, maintenance schedules and records.
  • Responsible for review, preliminary counseling, and participation in staff evaluations with the department manager. Acts as the resources person resolving technical matters.
  • Responsible for training as needed/directed by the department manager; the department manager retains responsibility for the training plan and acceptance of all training and competency.
  • Responsible for the coordination of orientation, training and support for ongoing competency of laboratory staff assigned to provide Microbiology laboratory services as established by the department manager. Responsible for documentation of validation of training for staff as directed by the department manager.
  • Manages workload and re-assignment of personnel based on the shift needs, communicates daily with Department Manager and Charge Techs.
  • Areas of responsibility include Medical Laboratory areas providing Microbiology Laboratory services.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with established protocols for a laboratory performing high complexity procedures as defined by the standards of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
  • Reports daily to and receives reports from the Microbiology Laboratory Manager and Charge Technologists to coordinate department workload and operational issues
  • Coordinates with the Associate Director for process improvement, and quality assurance
  • Documents and shares shift- to-shift report
  • Reports directly to the Microbiology Laboratory Manager
  • Assumes responsibility for work performed and works with minimal supervision
  • Work is performed within established guidelines, procedures and protocols. Independent judgment is required to resolve problems with occasional review by the Microbiology Laboratory Manager or designee and/or pathologist
  • Supports the Mission of CHE Trinity Health and Holy Cross Health.
What you will need:

Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science), biological, chemical or related science; and successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Medical Laboratory Science educational rotation.
-or-
  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics -and- successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program.
-or-
  • A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry, one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, -and- one year of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology and/or Clinical Microscopy within the last ten years. Clinical rotations or professional experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.
-And-
  • Five (5) years technical experience in a Clinical Microbiology setting with demonstrated competence in performing the full range of routine and specialized procedures (to include experience with Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology); experience with Serology/Immunology and Molecular technology preferred;
  • At least two (2) years of experience as a lead technologist, charge technologist or prior supervisory experience required;
  • Certification: Current by American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists or equivalent American Society for Microbiology certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist (generalist), or Microbiology Medical Laboratory Scientist or Microbiology Medical Technologist with participation in the ASCP certificate maintenance program (CMP) or AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP); or Can consider previously certified Medical Technologists (generalists) or Microbiology Medical Technologists, who met the credentialing requirements by the Department of Health Education and Welfare (HEW certified MT), who meets the required minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below, and possesses at least 5 years recent and continuous work experience in Clinical Microbiology, and participates in one of the above listed certification maintenance programs.
  • Must have visual acuity, to include depth perception and color discrimination;
  • Must demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of laboratory methodologies, interpretation of results, quality assurance, and regulatory standards applicable to clinical laboratory operations (e.g. College of American Pathologists, The Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospitals, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Acts, state regulations);
  • Ability to work in harmony and foster positive interpersonal interactions with personnel throughout the organization, customers, vendors and outside organizations; Demonstrated competence in organizing workflow, troubleshooting, and problem resolution in dealing with staff and physicians; Demonstrated time management and organizational skills;
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Must demonstrate comprehension and command of oral, verbal and written English language skills
