The Community: The City of Fort Collins sits nestled against the foothills of the Rocky Mountains alongside the banks of the Cache La Poudre River. At 5,000 feet in elevation, residents enjoy a moderate, four-season climate, with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year. With 174,800 residents, Fort Collins is Colorado's fourth-largest city and spans 57 square miles. With the 20 year growth projection, the City of Fort Collins is expected to reach 255,000 residents.

The first people who hunted in this region arrived approximately 11,000 years ago, and Northern Colorado remains an integral part of the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Ute Nations. European-American trappers and traders arrived by the early 1800s but rarely established permanent settlements. Gold and silver discoveries in the Colorado mountains in the mid-1800s and the prospect of land for farming and ranching attracted people from eastern cities and across the globe to the Colorado Territory, including what would become the town of Fort Collins; an agricultural colony that emerged from its founding days as a military fort. The expansion included the sugar beet industry's growth, which brought new residents whose descendants still live here today, including Mexican-American families from southern Colorado, New Mexico, and northern Mexico, as well as Germans from Russia. Since 1879, Fort Collins has been the home of the state's land grant institution, Colorado State University, which currently enrolls 34,000 students. Along with the university, the city's major high-tech and manufacturing companies and breweries attract new residents from all over the country and world. The community's overall social diversity continues to grow.

There are abundant outdoor recreation opportunities available to the many residents who enjoy healthy lifestyles. The nearby Horsetooth Reservoir is a key attraction, as is the Cache La Poudre-North Park Scenic Byway. The Downtown district provides many venues for live music, shopping, dining, and nightlife within the city. Fort Collins is widely considered the Craft Beer Capital of Colorado. SUMMARY: This is a grant funded position occurring during the Summer semester (May-August) or Fall semester (August-December) that supports a diversity of informal education programming for pre-k through adult learners in topics ranging from gardening, STEM, earth science, arts, crafts, cooking and wellness at the Gardens on Spring Creek, the community botanical garden of Fort Collins, Colorado. These positions will work closely with and report to the Gardens on Spring Creek's Education Coordinator and Education Assistant.

Interns set individual goals based on their interests and as a team we set schedules that work towards those goals while also meeting the needs of The Gardens' programming. Work hours are flexible based on school schedule, with typical work hours being 15-20 hours per week.

We will be hiring for interns to support both general education programming for summer and fall and our teen programs for the summer.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Gardens on Spring Creek is the community botanic garden of Fort Collins. It is a City of Fort Collins facility with a non-profit partner, the Friends of the Gardens on Spring Creek. The mission of The Gardens is to enrich the lives of people and foster environmental stewardship through horticulture. The Friends of the Gardens supports The Gardens through fundraising and advocacy.

The facility includes a Visitor's Center, Butterfly House and 12 acres of gardens. A detailed description of the Gardens on Spring Creek and its programs can be found at www.fcgov.com/gardens.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
  • Practice engaging, teaching and assisting with youth programming (Pre-K through middle school).
  • Research, develop, teach, assess and modify lessons that are age appropriate and meet CO standards
  • Develop a reflection and work schedule to meet intern's individual goals
  • Represent the Gardens at local school and activity fairs
  • Practice interpretive education skills assisting in our Butterfly House
  • Work with and help supervise teen and adult volunteers
  • Assist in facilitating teens in creating and implementing philanthropic projects.
  • Assist in mentoring teens 11-18 on professionalism, critical thinking, guest service, and public speaking.

  • No plant or butterfly knowledge required, but interest in learning more is necessary
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's or associate degree in progress in education or related field or 1-2 years' experience working in education or a related field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to outside weather conditions. Some work is performed in a standard office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet when teaching the work environment can me noisy and busy.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Able to communicate clearly and effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
