Position Summary

The Michigan State University (MSU) College of Nursing (CON) is seeking applications for our Detroit Campus Inst/Assistant Professor (Coordinator) position. This position is currently located at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC). It is a full-time, fixed term faculty position divided between teaching and supervisory responsibilities. The person in this position will oversee the Detroit CON facility including organizing and directing activities associated with campus operations including classroom, lab, and clinical scheduling, teaching, advising and support services for CON students. These activities will be in collaboration with the East Lansing CON administration, faculty, and staff. The Detroit Campus Inst/Assistant Professor (Coordinator) will participate in futuristic planning and growth of a more diverse student body from the greater Detroit area and in so doing, will work collaboratively with all clinical agency partners and our Henry Ford Health System + Michigan State University Health Sciences. The person in this position will be an ambassador in the CON's charge to increase inclusive excellence through students, faculty, patient and staff engagement. The Inst/Assistant Professor (Coordinator) will also ensure that equitable and inclusive practices are indicated in the preparation of written documents. This position reports to the MSU CON Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate Nursing Programs.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate and assist the simulation educator to implement and participate in the development of simulation cases/events, skills demonstration, and student skill assessments
  • Facilitate on-site classroom activities
  • Teaching responsibilities as assigned in area of expertise with an understanding of how diverse populations are impacted by that area of expertise
  • Collaborate scheduling and teaching assignments with East Lansing administrators, faculty, advisors, and clinical placements office
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Affairs at the East Lansing campus to advise students and assist in monitoring student progression
  • Assist with coordinating recruitment, arranging application appointments, and organizing events for new and prospective students from diverse backgrounds
  • Manage resources including the development of optimal schedules for the simulations, lab, classroom space, and clinical experiences
  • Comply with safety and sanitation standards in the storage areas and oversee the use and disposal of equipment and supplies
  • Represent the CON in the collaborative coordination of inclusive instructional activities and events with community health partners that service a diverse population, while incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion values
  • Instruct undergraduate students in both classroom, clinical settings, and via distant learning such as zoom classes and meetings
  • Collaborate with CON leadership and stakeholders in future planning and expansion of a diverse student body using inclusive practices with an emphasis on belonging for diverse populations
  • Participate in recruitment of new clinical sites and service-based learning opportunities that equitably serve the site and are consistent with program outcomes within the greater Detroit area, in collaboration with the CON clinical placement office
  • Coordinate student compliance requirements with the Office of Student Affairs at the East Lansing campus
  • Assure the site meets educational, and other accreditation standards and adhere to the Michigan State Board of Nursing rules

Required Degree

Doctorate -in Nursing or related field

Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Nursing for the rank of Instructor, and a DNP or PhD in Nursing is required for the rank of Assistant Professor
  • Unrestricted Michigan RN license without probationary status (or eligible)
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience in medical/surgical nursing or related area
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an educational setting (i.e., nursing education, clinical preceptor, hospital education classes, clinical simulation lab, etc.)
  • Current Basic Life Support certification
  • Excellent communication and organization skills and ability to function well independently
  • Commitment to the MSU CON values on diversity, equity, and inclusion
Desired Qualifications
  • DNP or PhD in Nursing or related field
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Instructor Certification
  • Experience with distance education
  • Experience with healthcare simulation
