Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Materials and Research Physical Test Lab performs quality assurance testing for many different construction materials used on Nebraska roadways. In this position, you will help prepare and perform tests, analyze data, and review certifications to ensure the materials submitted meet the pertinent material standards. This job includes both destructive and nondestructive testing of reinforcing steel, high-strength bolts, and anchor rods, certification reviews of guardrails, concrete and plastic pipe, and other transportation-related materials. You will have opportunities to train on inspections of culverts, high mast light towers, and cantilever signs. The lab has three other team members, and we're looking for another great teammate to share our experience and positive work environment.

Pay range is $20.754 - $30.594 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

Job Duties:

Job duties in the Physical Testing Unit of the NDOT Materials & Research Division will include a laboratory setting while testing various project and maintenance materials related to bridge and highway construction, as well as evaluating new and current highway products. You may also assist others in charge with the on-site inspection of various bridges, lighting, traffic control, sign structures, high mast towers, timber, guardrails, culverts, and other drainage structures.

REQUIRED:

High school education or the equivalent and experience in highway construction inspection or materials testing or other laboratory operations.

OTHER:

Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

  • Competent computer skills (Microsoft Office Products, Outlook, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of AASHTOWARE software
  • Knowledge of inspections - related to highway construction products
  • Ability to read plans and interpret specifications such as NDOT, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications relating to unit activities.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work at heights above ground level (i.e., on or around bridges given proper safety equipment)
  • Strong work ethic and motivation
  • Independently organized
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (typical correspondence includes contractors, NDOT personnel, plant managers, and the coordination of testing and inspection-related activities).
