The Department of Human Genetic has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Genetic Counselor 1. The Genetic Counselor 1 provides genetic counseling, education, and psychological support for those with genetic disorders, birth defects, positive newborn screening results or who are at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.

JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Provides services in response to a wide variety of referral indications, such as pediatric and adult genetics, cancer, and preconception.
  • Provides outreach and education to healthcare professionals and the general population.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with community and disease organizations.
  • Develops educational and promotional materials.
  • Speaks at engagements in schools or community centers.
  • Updates we content for the clinic to ensure accuracy.
  • Interacts with and supervises genetic counseling students and other medical trainees.
  • Assists with the design and implementation of teaching strategies and content for trainees, healthcare providers, and members of the community.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, according to federal, local, and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Collects and evaluates patient medical and family history; performs genetic risk assessments independently, demonstrating expertise with risk assessment tools; provides clear risk information to patients and providers.
  • Demonstrates understanding related to genetic tests and the associated disorders provided by the laboratory; develops expertise in assigned testing area.
  • Acts as a liaison for clients of the laboratories, providing information and technical support on appropriate test use, limits/accuracy, interpretation of results, reporting and/or follow-up of abnormal results.
  • Calls out patient results for clients of the laboratories, providing information and technical support on appropriate test use, limits/accuracy, interpretation of results, reporting and/or follow-up of abnormal results.
  • Travel to different sites in Miami-Dade and Broward counties will be required on an as needed basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master's degree from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) accredited training program or equivalent.

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant field. Certified by the American Board of Genetic counseling (ABGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG).

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion
