Job Description: Apprentice Engineer - EM Certified - location HBO (band 4)

Our Materials and Structural Analysis business helps customers drive cutting-edge research and discoveries by delivering innovative solutions, such as world-class scanning and transmission electron microscopes, combined with advanced software suites. Our EM Certified team is responsible for generating a new revenue stream by actively trading-in, refurbishing and reselling previously owned systems.

Combining hardware and software expertise in electron, ion, and light microscopy technologies with deep application knowledge in the materials science, life sciences, semiconductor, electronics, and natural resources markets, the worldwide Electron Microscopy employees are dedicated to customers' pursuit of discovery and resolution to global challenges.

How you will make an impact:

The Field Service Engineer for the Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) of Thermo Fisher Scientific performs with the assistance of an experienced Engineer on (de-)installations, servicing and repair of sophisticated equipment and systems.

The Apprentice Engineer for EM Certified will join a complementary team of engineers with skills ranging from sophisticated computer networks, precision mechanics, high vacuum theory, electron optics and chemistry. This role provides the opportunity to grow to roles within the Operations and Service teams across the Thermo Fisher organization. What you will do:
  • Participates/shadows on-site system un-crating and crating activities at the EM Certified facility.
  • Participates/ Shadows assessing returned systems and making detailed refurbishment plans
  • Participates/shadows on-site system refurbishment activities at EM Certified facility
  • Provide troubleshooting and repair support within the EM Certified facility
  • Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with colleagues
  • Complete technical training, as required
  • Travel if required to customer sites for System Evaluation, Installation and/or De-installation
  • Partner with colleagues to acquire knowledge via technical mentorship
  • Raise awareness of workflow inefficiency with EM Certified Manufacturing Engineer
  • Provide appropriate input in writing updating and correcting documentation
  • Must maintain Thermo Fisher Scientifics' Four-I Values.
How you will get here:

Education
  • An associate degree from a technical or undergrad program in electronics, physics, engineering, computer science or similar field preferred; or 1-2 years of relevant combination of skills and experience
Experience
  • 0-2 Experience or ability to learn, with operating O-scopes, digital voltmeter and logical problem solving.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Required to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with a consistent record to make decisions with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to be detail oriented, problem solver, promote team environment.
  • Able to display a high level of confidentiality for both customer and Thermo Fisher Scientific.
  • Literate in Windows software environments
  • Basic trouble shooting skills preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics preferred
  • Interpersonal communication, teamwork/building, time management, organizational, problem solving and customer service skills
  • Must be willing to travel 25-50% of the time.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and passport and travel regionally and internationally as the need arises.
  • May require Covid-19 vaccination.
  • Extensive walking may be required.
  • May work at customer locations, in office environment to include cubicles and/or in laboratory environments.
  • Must be able to secure entrance to US Government laboratories and facilities
  • Potentially pass-through areas where chemical-based allergens may be in use (such as penicillin, tetracycline, etc)
  • Depending on area of building, personal protective equipment may be worn to include lab coats, coveralls, hood, facemask, hairnets, safety gloves, safety glasses, steel toe shoes, and/or bump hats.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
