Cambridge Consultants develops breakthrough products, creates and licenses intellectual property, and provides business consultancy in technology-critical issues for clients worldwide. For more than 60 years, the company has been helping its clients turn business opportunities into commercial successes, whether they are launching first-to-market products, entering new markets, or expanding existing markets through the introduction of new technologies. With a team of more than 850 team members, including engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and designers, in offices in Cambridge (UK), Boston (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and Singapore, Cambridge Consultants offers solutions across a diverse range of industries, including medical technology, industrial and consumer products, digital health, energy and wireless communications.

Role Description

The Digital Signal Processing (DSP) group at Cambridge Consultants develops innovative new technology to enable world-leading product development. We work on projects ranging from small, fast-paced studies to large multidisciplinary developments of 50+ engineers. We are looking for talented, experienced DSP engineers with an interest in designing and implementing systems using advanced signal processing algorithms to create new capabilities in the areas of wireless communications, sensors, audio processing, and image processing systems.

In this role you will design and develop prototype systems that demonstrate novel capabilities for a diverse range of products. Examples of such projects include:

Ultra-reliable communications for satellites
IP block acceleration of Voice Activity Detection using custom in-house DSP cores
Map-based indoor navigation using sensor fusion
Next generation commercial radio receiver design
Communications system for a fleet of bots in a challenging indoor environment

You'll engage with clients that are constantly stretching the art of the possible by combining state-of-the-art signal processing theory with a practical approach to implementation on a wide variety of processing platforms.

What we offer

One of the most significant upsides of this role is the variety of projects you'll work on. You may be designing filters for simulation of a system one week, programming for a platform the next, then providing vectors and interpreting results from our hardware test team. You'll have the opportunity to steer your career along the path of your choice, whether you prefer meeting and talking with clients or leading teams on innovative projects. Our collaborative and supportive working environment allows our engineers to quickly develop their skills and knowledge in unfamiliar areas, enabling us to drive development of cutting-edge technologies at a rapid pace.

As a member of our team, you will be involved in every stage of our technology development life cycle, from developing proof-of-concept demonstrations for initial sales leads to designing, implementing, and testing innovative new products. In addition to day-to-day project work, you'll also play a part in creating the Cambridge Consultants of tomorrow: contributing to a new IP generation, influencing the direction or our DSP skillset development, and evolving our capabilities in groundbreaking new technologies.

What you'll bring

  • A passion for signal processing with a desire to broaden your horizons in new and exciting areas
  • MS (or BS with 3-5 years of experience) in a field related to digital signal processing (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of signal processing theory and applications
  • C, C++, or Rust programming and software engineering skills
  • Experience with scripting and analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python
  • Good testing habits: unit testing, system testing, regression testing, etc.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to convey your designs and ideas to a broad, multi-disciplinary team
The following are not required, but experience in any of these areas would be advantageous
  • Experience in embedded real-time programming
  • Experience in FPGA, ASIC, and/or electronic hardware design
  • Experience with RF or Audio test equipment
  • Experience in communications systems, image, audio, and/or machine learning algorithm development and implementation
  • Exposure to relevant industry communications standards (3GPP, IEEE, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc.)
