CTY Instructional Leader
The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is a nonprofit dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced K-12 students around the world. CTY Instructional Lead Teachers support academically advanced students enrolled in Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) courses. They have a primary placement in a program unit (in-person, online, or integrated programs), but are expected to teach courses across units as needed. Instructional Lead Teachers teach, communicate with students and families, engage in curriculum development and course maintenance, and supervise other instructors in their area of content expertise. The percentage of effort dedicated to each of these major responsibilities varies based on evolving needs of the program. Teaching assignments (course titles and program modality) also vary based on evolving program needs.

The current opening is for a CTY Instructional Lead Teacher of Language Arts with a primary placement in Online Experiences.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities




Instruction (typically 25-50%)

  • Teach assigned courses in keeping with expectations for specific program and course modality.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that supports the social, emotional, and cognitive learning needs of all students.
  • Monitor student progress and assist students in accomplishing learning objectives.
  • Use CTY's learning management system (currently Moodle) and other collaboration and instructional technologies (Microsoft 365, including Teams, Zoom, etc.)
  • Review student work, provide feedback, and evaluate assignments and assessments for understanding and mastery. Assign letter grades in graded courses.
  • Complete and submit evaluations of student academic performance and any required program evaluation instruments within the required time frame.
  • Participate in action research as requested.


Parent/Guardian/School Communication (typically 5-10%)
  • Communicate about student progress to student and parent and/or school sponsor according to expectations for assigned course, program and modality.
  • Communicate with instructors, parents, students, and schools regarding course content, student course placement, and other academic issues
  • As needed, coordinate the proctoring of tests with parents or schools.


Supervision (typically 30%)
  • Supervise instructors as assigned.
  • Assist with the training, supervision, and monitoring of casual instructors and teaching assistants.
  • Develop course-specific instructor training materials and experiences, in collaboration with CTY professional learning lead.
  • Assist with interviewing and evaluating instructor and teaching assistant candidates.
  • Hold regular group or individual meetings with instructional staff.
  • Arrange substitute instructors as needed.


Curriculum Development & Course Maintenance (typically 10% - 35%)
  • Author new courses as assigned.
  • Participate in the ongoing review and enhancement of current courses.
  • Review, update, and test courses each session in the test-server environment and adhere to the course promotion process.
  • Maintain content for courses supervised.
  • Respond to and fix errors using program tools (currently include Moodle and Respondus).
  • Participate in ongoing professional learning on best practices in teaching and learning for academically advanced students.

Internal & External Contacts required as part of the job
  • Collaborative relationships with Academic Programs leaders, program managers, and operations teams. Frequent contact with students, school contacts, and parents remotely (via telephone, email, and web-based virtual meeting room software; Microsoft Teams and Zoom) or in person when appropriate.
  • Knowledge of digital tools used by CTY, currently Moodle, HTML, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Respondus.

  • Computer, 100%


Physical Requirements
  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via email, telephone, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom, and possibly face to face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.


Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervises up to ten casual instructor(s).


Work schedule
  • Remote, except if/when assigned to teach an in-person course on site.
  • Work days: typically M-F, 8:30am-5pm, but will vary as synchronous course sessions are typically held evenings and weekends.
  • In addition, meetings with casual instructors, parents and students are also typically held evenings and weekends.


Additional Information
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in a content related field.
  • Five years teaching experience.
  • Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree is strongly preferred.
  • Two years teaching experience in a specific content area.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching in person and online.
  • Knowledge of digital tools used by CTY, currently Moodle, HTML, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and Respondus.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
