Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) welcomes applications for a Temporary Researcher. The researcher will work in a microbial ecology laboratory (led by Noah Fierer) that is located on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • The researcher will be primarily responsible for leading a series of studies focused on the biotic and abiotic factors influencing the soil microbiome, pairing cultivation-independent approaches (namely DNA sequencing) with multivariate statistical approaches to link genomic information to microbial adaptations and environmental preferences.
  • Contributing to other projects identifying linkages between environmental microbes and the health of humans, plants, and ecosystems.
  • Mentoring of undergraduate students working in the laboratory.
  • Facilitating collaborations with researchers both at the University of Colorado and elsewhere.


What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary position and is ineligible for benefits except those required by law. This position will accrue 0.034 hour of sick leave for every hour worked.
  • The length of this position is expected to be six months.
  • All University of Colorado Boulder employees are required to align with the campus COVID-19 vaccine requirement. New employees must provide proof of vaccination or receive a medical or religious exemption within 30 days of employment.


What We Can Offer

The hiring rate for this full-time temporary appointment is $28.85 per hour.

Temporary positions at the University of Colorado are not benefits-eligible, however, all positions are eligible for paid sick leave.

What We Require

  • PhD in biology, ecology, microbiology or a related field.
  • Expertise in managing interdisciplinary projects and analyzing large datasets.
  • Experience with cultivation-independent analyses of microbial communities (including metagenomics, and/or marker gene sequencing) and analysis of complex datasets.


What You Will Need

  • Strong interest in microbial ecology and microbial genomics with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary group of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to implement the proposed projects.
  • Highly collaborative and creative scientist with an ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A proven track record of being able to optimize and troubleshoot research methods (including both lab and bioinformatic/statistical methods).
  • Highly organized, with very good attention to detail, and capable of working 40 hours per week.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to serve as an effective mentor to undergraduate students and other early career scientists.
