The Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Associate Program Director to join its Internal Medicine Residency Program. This position is intended for faculty with experience in teaching, leadership, innovation, and clinical service in an internal medicine residency program.

This University-based program is sponsored by Florida Atlantic University in collaboration with our Graduate Medical Education Consortium. The Internal Medicine Residency utilizes three Consortium hospitals (Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Bethesda Hospital East, and Delray Medical Center) to provide a strong clinical experience and a broad diversity of patients. Residents are provided with a comprehensive and balanced curriculum that prepares them for careers in general internal medicine or medical subspecialties. Additionally, they have access to the College of Medicine's Simulation Center.

The mission of the Schmidt College of Medicine is to educate physicians and scientists to meet the healthcare needs of Florida, to conduct biomedical research to advance knowledge which improves patient care, and to serve patients and communities with competence, compassion, and respect. The mission of the Internal Medicine Residency is to provide trainees with the education and experiences that will help develop the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to be a well-rounded, thoughtful, and empathetic physician who is board-certified in internal medicine and embraces life-long learning.

The Associate Program Director will assist the Program Director (PD) and have a flexible role to include direct teaching of residents and medical students, development of instructional materials and curricular design, supervision and evaluation of residents, advising and mentoring residents, and leadership in research and scholarship. The position will have clinical service in both inpatient (hospital teaching service) and outpatient (residency continuity clinic) settings.

Responsibilities include:

  • Report directly to the Program Director
  • Take an active role in curriculum development, resident teaching and evaluation, continuous program improvement, and faculty development
  • Serve as Chair of the Program Evaluation Committee
  • Promote a learning environment conducive to educating the residents in each of the ACGME competencies
  • Evaluate and report to the PD the supervising interactions and/or learning environment that does not meet the program's standards
  • Serve as teaching faculty in continuity clinic and on inpatient ward services
  • Dedicate at least 20 hours per week to the administrative and educational activities of the internal medicine educational program and receive institutional support for this time
  • Participate in academic societies and in educational programs designed to enhance educational and administrative skills
  • Mentor and guide residents in quality improvement projects, case reports, and research projects
Minimum Qualifications:Doctoral degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited institution and credentials that merit appointment at the rank of assistant professor or higher required.

A Florida medical license or eligibility for Florida licensure and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or American Board of Osteopathic Internal Medicine (ABOIM) board certification required.

One year of experience as an active faculty member in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency program is preferred.

Ongoing clinical activity (inpatient and/or outpatient) preferred.

Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
