SUMMARY:

The Associate Director provides support for the leadership and direction for the overall residential experience while helping foster a positive living and learning environment for our students. The Associate Director is primarily responsible for the oversight of the Residence Life program; assists in the administration of the student housing program; develops and implements departmental operations; coordinates assessment efforts; establishes learning outcomes and implementation strategies for residence life.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Residence Life Responsibilities

  • Develops a campus residential community and experience through implementation of an established community development model and programming initiatives with residential staff.
  • Recruits, selects, and supervises five masters-level Area Coordinators and 1 masters-level Coordinator of Training & Development.
  • Indirectly supervises a student staff of 92.
  • Provides feedback for direct reports through goal setting and performance management process. Directs the evaluation process for student staff.
  • Oversees the recruitment, selection, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of one graduate assistant as well as one Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I) summer intern.
  • Oversees the execution of student staff selection, reappointment processes, and student staff training.
  • Oversees the development of a six-week, credit-bearing course for newly selected student staff, and trains designated staff as instructors of the course.
  • Manages budgets associated with residence life to include planning, distribution, and reconciliation.
  • Performs periodic assessment for Residence Life initiatives and makes corrections based on data obtained.
  • Manages the administrative functions of the Residence Life including but not limited to the development of student staff contracts, duty schedules, and staff manuals.
  • Oversees the administration of the Faculty in Residence program.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Office of Living and Learning for all living and learning programs in residence.
Housing Responsibilities
  • Serve as proxy for Associate Director for Residence Life and Housing in the office when needed. Must be well versed in the operation, management, and upkeep of the Housing Management System (StarRez).
  • Assists the Associate Director of Residence Life and Housing for the administration of the student housing program, including: Assignments, Contracts, Reporting, Analysis, and Record Management, as needed
  • Ensures and oversees the proper inventory and checks of all residential rooms, lounges, and spaces.
  • Co-coordinates the annual move-in process for all new and returning students to include establishing partnerships and organization/direction with and for on and off campus constituents.
  • Co-coordinates an annual plan for fire and safety inspections and drills, in accordance with VA law and with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Coordinates all closing procedures and responsibilities in partnership with University Facilities.
  • Coordinates all end-of-year damage billing processes.
Additional Departmental Responsibilities
  • Coordinates residential experience tours with the Office of Admission to promote and highlight on-campus housing.
  • Maintains office hours to allow for interaction with students and other stakeholders.
  • Follows up with student or parent concerns through meetings, phone, or electronic contact.
  • Assists with the response and management of all departmental grievances while maintaining all associated correspondences and records.
  • Assists in the establishment and implementation of strategic planning, short and long-term goals and objectives, policies, and operating procedures for Residence Life.
  • Manages routine reviews and updates to departmental website, policies, and publications.
  • Assists the Director in advising the Resident Assistant Council to provide feedback, guidance and advice for future direction and needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
Division / University Involvement
  • Serve as a University Conduct Officer.
  • Participates inan on-call duty rotation to assist with housing and facilities related concerns ensuring all appropriate protocols are followed.
  • Designated as a Critical Employee, provides support and assistance when necessary in response to campus crisis.
  • Participates in divisional and/or University committees on behalf of the department.
  • Serves as academic advisor for first-year and sophomore undeclared students, including but not limited to academic performance, major acquisition, course selection, and understanding general education and graduation requirements.
  • Represents the department, division, and University through involvement in professional organizations, associations, committees, and/or by presenting programs at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the areas of college student development theory, residential life, and student conduct is required.
  • Comprehensive experience and understanding of conflict management, problem solving, crisis management, supervision, time management is required.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional standards, policies, procedures, and legislation related to the areas of residence life/housing is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required; demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Computer literacy with web applications is required; experience with Microsoft Office, Banner/Banner Web, Cascade, Maxient, and StarRez is preferred; understanding of current social media platforms used by college students is helpful.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • A master's degree in higher education administration, or a closely related field is required.
  • A minimum of five years experience in higher education administration is required; experience with residence life and housing administration is highly desired.
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
  • Rotating after-hours, night and weekend work as needed
SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $54,413.00 to $72,093.00 annually)
