INTRODUCTION

The UTC Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut seeks applicants for an Assistant/Associate/Full Research Professor and Associate Director of Research Programs.  

Under the general direction of the Director of the UTC Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering (UTC-IASE), the Associate Director of Research Programs provides research expertise, leadership, program management, and coordination for the research and outreach programs of the UTC-IASE. Specifically, this position is responsible for research projects archiving and reporting, creation of new research opportunities, outreach and industry engagement, and UTC-IASE faculty coordination in research clusters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and managing research programs, overseeing the smooth operation and day-to-day delivery of these programs, monitoring and coordinating the administrative and reporting aspects of the program, and will act independently within the goals and objectives of the program and the guidelines established by the supervisor. The primary focus of this job is on the design, organization, implementation, and management of the research and outreach programs of the UTC-IASE, as well as the management of the day-to-day delivery of its industry services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Operations, including reporting on the progress of the research activities of the Institute and all other relevant developments; leading special research projects/operations which may be ongoing or short-term and which require planning, coordination, supervision, and thorough knowledge of the program; serving as a resource to faculty and staff on matters relating to strategic initiatives.

Research Opportunities Creation, including providing program leadership in research opportunities and organizing teams to respond to industry and federal agency research calls; team building and mentoring of young faculty; leading of faculty research clusters.

Research Outreach, including leading promotional activities for the research program, helping establish partnerships with industry; overseeing the planning, organization, and execution of institute research networking events, conferences, and other meetings; and serving as a resource to potential and current program participants, corporations, state agencies, and other organizations and individuals on matters related to the Institute's research program and activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. degree in related field and at least 2 years of relevant experience;
  • Experience with coordination of university research projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of, and demonstrated competence in, developing industry engagement and partnerships.
  • Experience with academic programs/projects creation or generation
  • Ability to plan and organize workshops and research symposia
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators as well as external agencies/groups, and the public.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex projects to successful completion adhering to established deadlines.

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in industry-funded academic programs
  • Experience or involvement with industry related to systems engineering
  • Exposure and relationships with the Systems Engineering community and in particular INCOSE
  • Experience in the administration of distance learning courses
  • Experience in industry engagement and outreach activities.

  • APPOINTMENT TERMS

    This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure track position with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2021. The successful candidate's academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus.  Rank will be determined based on the candidate's credentials.
