Position Summary

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU) is seeking outstanding candidates for a junior faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in experimental nuclear science establishing a program aimed at tests of fundamental symmetries using rare isotopes. Examples include, but are not limited to, using rare isotopes for searches of permanent electric dipole moments and other time-reversal symmetry violating moments, studies of parity violation, and other precision measurements with sensitivity to Beyond Standard Model Physics.

The position will be filled at the rank of assistant professor at MSU within the FRIB Faculty Position System with a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The FRIB faculty is comprised of more than 40 full-time faculty members and is the home of a similar number of postdoctoral researchers, and 150 graduate and 200 undergraduate students. The academic program in any of the joint departments offer degrees at the BS, MS, and PhD levels.

FRIB is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science user facility and affords world-class research opportunities in low-energy nuclear science since user operation commenced in May 2022. Since 2010, MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report's rankings of graduate programs.

Required Degree

Doctorate -nuclear science, atomic/molecular/optical

Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate is expected to:

• hold a doctoral degree in nuclear science, atomic/molecular/optical physics, or a related field,
• have at least two years of postdoctoral experience by August 2023,
• have at least two years of experience in the experimental fields of tests of fundamental symmetries and/or precision measurements by August 2023,
• establish and lead a sponsored, world-class experimental research program at FRIB aimed at tests of fundamental symmetries using rare isotopes,
• exhibit promise to play a leadership role in the nuclear science community,
• exhibit promise to be an effective instructor using evidence-based techniques,
• exhibit promise to be an inclusive mentor to a diverse cohort of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels,
• exhibit promise for excellence in research and teaching,
• exhibit a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and the ability to work in diverse teams, and
• engage in institutional and science community service.

The statement should describe the applicant's approach to, and/or experience with, classroom teaching and mentoring in research, including experience teaching and mentoring students from broadly diverse demographic and social backgrounds.
