Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position supports the University's mission of providing student-centered, quality education and is committed to the success of our students and the university. This involves teaching effectiveness, professional development, research and scholarly/creative activities, institutional service, professional and community service, and student engagement.

The successful candidate for this position will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic Criminal Justice Program with 12 full-time faculty members and both undergraduate and graduate students, collaborate with criminal justice agencies in the course of their research or service, and engage with students and faculty in the School of Public Service.

Boise State University's School of Public Service is dedicated to excellence in innovative teaching, cutting edge scholarship and meaningful community outreach, serving the State of Idaho, region, national, and global communities. The school is composed of rich and diverse academic programs, including Criminal Justice, Political Science, and Public Policy and Administration, as well as interdisciplinary programs such as Environmental Studies. The mission of the school is supported by a variety of centers and institutes that facilitate research and public engagement.

This Assistant Professor position will be housed in the School of Public Service with primary appointment to the Criminal Justice Program. Criminal Justice is a well-established program with successful Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts programs, and a strong record of scholarly activity, including both peer-reviewed research and collaboration with local criminal justice agencies.

Candidates' areas of focus are preferred to include the following:
• Courts and Sentencing
• Corrections

Level Scope:
The Assistant Professor is a member of the ranked faculty with an entry-level academic rank who has demonstrated achievement in the areas of teaching; research, scholarship, or creative activities; institutional and professional service appropriate to the discipline.

Essential Functions:
Teaching:
This position will support the University's mission of providing student-centered, quality education. This means the professor must:

• Be committed to the success of our students and the university.
• Be committed to student learning, retention, persistence, and completion.
• Teach assigned courses that may include day, evening, and online or hybrid classes.
• Maintain and improve competence in subjects being taught.
• Post and hold office hours in a physical and electronic format (to include virtual office hours) as appropriate.

Scholarly, creative, or research activities:
Faculty must demonstrate a commitment to their discipline through scholarly and creative activities. They are expected to maintain an active research agenda and produce peer-reviewed and public service scholarship.

Service:
Faculty must demonstrate a commitment to serving Boise State University, his/her profession, and the community. This type of commitment is demonstrated by:

• Service to students
• Participation and leadership in program, college, or university committees and professional organization
• As appropriate to their discipline, affairs of the local, state, or national community.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
These must be in accordance with discipline and departmental standards and expectations, including:

• Demonstrated advanced level of oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in creating course materials (syllabus, handouts, presentations, etc.) which enhance student interest and engagement.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
• Demonstrated ability to manage effective, friendly, and civil working relationships with staff, faculty, and students.
• Demonstrated ability to produce high quality work while working independently.
• Demonstrated ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field at the time of appointment (a J.D. alone is not sufficient for this position) is required. The candidate must also be able to demonstrate excellence, or the potential for excellence, in teaching, research, and community engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A specialization in courts and/or corrections, including the ability to teach introductory, upper-level undergraduate, and graduate-level courses in those areas, is strongly preferred.
• Interest in and/or evidence of seeking external funding is preferred.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary ranges from $61,000 to $63,500 depending on experience.
