Postpartum/Gynecology (3 JPP):
3 John Pappajohn Pavilion (3 JPP) is a 24-bed inpatient unit dedicated for women's services. Gynecological services include post-surgery care of total abdominal hysterectomies, robotic hysterectomies, myomectomies, fallopian tube reanastomosis, exploratory laparotomy of pelvic masses, and repair of uterine and vaginal wall prolapses. Postpartum/newborn services include couplet care, electronic infant security, lactation specialists, and support from Mother's Milk Bank of Iowa.

The Assistant Nurse Manager interfaces with the administrative and clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and maintaining the delivery of care processes for a specific unit and/or patient populations. The Assistant Nurse Manager assumes delegated responsibility for implementation of daily operations for specific units and/or patient populations.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Participates in the assessment and evaluation of nursing care requirements for the patient population.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of care for a patient population, which are consistent with current nursing practice and the condition and age of the patients.
  • Assesses patient care to ensure that patient assignment system reflects patient care needs and staff capabilities.
  • Monitors and contributes to individual patient care and discharge planning activities carried out by unit staff nurses.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members and implements care planning activities for specific group of patients.
  • Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical expertise when providing direct patient care.
  • Serves as a resource for patient care problems.
  • Practices according to department/division/unit policies, procedures, protocols and practice guidelines to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager to assist with implementation of division and unit(s)strategic plans.

Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Night shift, hours may vary, on call coverage
Location: John Pappajohn Pavilion (JPP)
Rotations: Must be flexible to meet unit needs

Education Required:
  • Bachelors of Nursing Required

Required Qualifications:
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making, and critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management, organization of workload, delegation, attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education
  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Current experience managing/leading transitions in care
  • Experience in Labor and Delivery nursing
  • Knowledge of UI and UIHC policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Experience working in a large academic medical center
  • Experience working in a union environment
