Our basic investigative activities concentrate on immunology, genetics/genomics, pharmacology, DNA repair and oncogene action. Our clinical science covers each cancer type; has a strong focus in clinical trials of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and in correlative laboratory studies. Our work is supported by a portfolio of peer-reviewed grants, industrial agreements and research endowments.Examples of studies within Dr. Patel's group are described below:
PCORI - Comparative Effectiveness Study of Two Supportive Cancer Care Approaches is a 5-year funded trial by the PCORI to determine the best approach to ensure patients receive evidence-based supportive cancer care. We will randomize 24 clinics. Each site will enroll 125 patients for a total of 2,996 patients. The clinics include VA clinics as well as community oncology practices.Improving Supportive Care for Patients with Thoracic Malignancies is a 3 year funded trial by Genentech to evaluate the impact of a lay health coach on symptom management. Currently 60 patients are enrolled and randomized. Follow-up for 9 months for each patient to evaluate impact on patient activation, satisfaction, quality of life and acute care use. Chart abstraction on outcomes regarding acute care use will need to be conducted for this study.LUNGEvity is a 2-year funded trial to evaluate the impact of a lay health coach on precision cancer care delivery for patients with lung cancer. We will randomize 60 participants to evaluate impact on patient activation, satisfaction, quality of life and acute care use. Chart abstraction on outcomes regarding acute care use will need to be conducted for this study.ALCANCE Food for Health Equity Pilot will investigate the efficacy and patient satisfaction with a supplemental food intervention for patients receiving cancer care in Monterey County, CA. Thirty participants receive a voucher card for the purchase of fresh produce for 6-months.The Breast Cancer Study is funded through CBCRP and involves conducting surveys and interview with current cancer patients, caregivers, providers, and other key stakeholders to understand gaps in knowledge of and access to tumor testing. Recommendations will be made based on surveys and interview data to improve equitable access to recommended testing.The Community Impact Study focuses on wildfires and air quality in the San Joaquin Valley and involves local partnerships and the formation of an expert panel that will propose recommendations and policy changes to improve health outcomes and equity.Duties include:
