Role Summary/Purpose -

The engineer will be responsible for the reliable integration of fuel cell technology into the locomotive propulsion system. The responsibilities of this position will involve design & development of hydrogen fuel cell propulsion systems for use in heavy duty applications. The engineer will establish verification and validation plans for fuel cell systems to meet stringent demands for these severe duty applications,

The engineer should have demonstrated expertise in the integration of electric propulsion systems into mobile applications, and component development necessary to meet application specific requirements... including the need to understand ambient conditions and duty cycle effects on reliability and overall life cycle cost. A broad understanding of fuel cell types, benefits, drawbacks, and future trends for each. A knowledge of locomotive to 'prime mover' interaction & integration. Accepted degrees include electrical and mechanical engineering.

Essential Responsibilities -

  • Serve as a recognized leader in fuel cell propulsion system integration methods.
  • Anticipate, develop, and apply technologies to current and future locomotive and mining vehicles to promote competitive differentiation
  • Predict behavior of propulsion systems through the creation and utilization of analytical models that can then be used optimize component design.
  • Significant collaboration with Locomotive Systems Engineering to define requirement flow down from higher level customer needs.
  • Work with suppliers on long term fuel cell technology development for component and system level Multi-Generational Product and Technology Plans (MGPP & MGTP)
  • Conduct formal trade studies between contending concepts and fuel cell manufacturers necessary to meet system level needs.
  • Ensure viability and defend recommendations in design reviews
  • Properly understand and communicate component level requirements based on system needs.
  • Author and manage design documentation (review material, Component Functional / Purchase Specifications and Interface Control Documents, etc.)
  • Provide engineering leadership and technical guidance to teams working assigned projects.
  • Conduct optimization studies on performance, total life-cycle cost and reliability.
  • Interface with fuel cell suppliers, manage relationship and proper communication and interpretation of requirements.
  • Lead system level FMEA's and safety analyses

Qualifications/Requirements -
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a system or component design, verification & validation environment
  • Knowledge of mobile applications and interaction between vehicle and fuel cell control systems. Preferably locomotive and/or mining trucks.

Desired Characteristics -
  • Expertise in fuel cell technologies... including vehicle system integration, packaging, control and thermal management.
  • Experience in integration of electrical propulsion systems into vehicles, preferably locomotive and/or mining.
  • Experience in designing components for heavy industry, specifically off-road applications.
  • Familiarity with system modelling software and methods to predict output with input without having prototype hardware
  • Experience in Hardware In The Loop (HITL) testing systems, methods, and
  • Ability to formulate design and validation strategies with senior engineering leaders, Principal Engineers & Sub-system managers.
  • Proven track record of delivering results and leading teams in a dynamic business environment
  • Proven record of working cross-functionally with Sourcing, Manufacturing & Quality organizations.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong project management skills, oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Effective team player and facilitator
  • Customer-centric mindset
